Enzyme activities in manured soils
AbstractThe effect of manures processed anaerobically (maize stalks and cow dung fermented for varying periods during biogas generation) and aerobically (compost and farmyard manure) on the activities of dehydrogenase and nitrogenase in clay loam and sandy soils was studied. Application of manures generally increased the activity of dehydrogenase but depressed that of nitrogenase in both soils. Ageing of biogas manures decreased the activity of both enzymes. The sandy soil possessed higher dehydrogenase and lower nitrogenase activities than the clay loam soil. Nitrogenase activity inhibited in the manured soils started recovery after a month of incubation. The fermented manures (anaerobically processed) produced higher dehydrogenase and lower nitrogenase activities in both soils than the aerobically processed manures.
