Behaviour of concrete beams with hybrid reinforcement
Hybrid reinforcement for concrete members consists of rods made with an FRP (Fibre-Reinforced-Plastic) skin over a steel core. The FRP skin is made of braided, epoxy-impregnated aramid or vinylon fibre. This paper presents experimental and analytical results for beams reinforced with hybrid rods for the evaluation of the flexural behaviour of the system. From beam tests, it was found that the experimental load-deflection curves could be predicted based on the knowledge of the tensile behaviour of the hybrid rods, and the classical assumptions used in conventionally reinforced concrete analysis. Beams with hybrid rods had fewer cracks which were further spaced than for beams with conventional steel rebars. Longitudinal split cracks developed in beams reinforced with hybrid rods with the aramid skin. After failure of the FRP skin, beams were still able to sustain the load with resistance from the steel core.
