AbstractThe paper analyses the two main aspects of coupling between flexural and torsional-flexural buckling:-the mutual influence of the deformations corresponding to these two instability modes;-the superposition of second-order compressive stresses arising from bending and from the nonuniform torsion.Extending the Ayrton-Perry concept to the case of spatial buckling, the effect of coupling can be allowed for by simply modifying the imperfection coefficient α.
