Consolidation theory for prefabricated vertical drains with elliptic cylindrical assumption
Abstract The consolidation process for PVD-imposed foundations is analysed using vertical drain theory, which was initially proposed for sand drain wells. This paper models a PVD as an elliptical cylindrical drainage body, which is more similar to the shape of a PVD. Basic equations for vertical drain consolidation under an elliptic cylindrical coordinate system are presented, and solutions of the excess pore water pressure and degree of consolidation are obtained. Comparisons between the newly presented solution and traditional solutions with different equivalent diameters are discussed. The traditional method with the perimeter equivalent model is found to overestimate the drainage effects of PVDs.
