On the use of organic manures for amendment of compacted clay soils: Effects of aerobic and anaerobic conditions
AbstractThe effects of manures on soil fertility are often inconsistent and unpredictable. It is suggested that proper aeration conditions in the soil-manure mixture may be essential for improving physical properties of clay soils. Soil samples were mixed with compost or manure and incubated aerobically, anaerobically (under N2 atmosphere) and under flooded conditions. Soil density and aggregate stability were both improved when the mixtures were incubated aerobically, with no effect when the incubation was under anaerobic conditions. Similarly, aerobic incubation led to increased formation of polysaccharides, polyuronides and humic acids, compared to a decrease with time of these components under anaerobic conditions.
