Seismic performance of different chevron braced frames
Abstract Chevron-braced frames produce a large unbalanced force and vertical deformation at brace intersections. To reduce the vertical deformation and unbalanced force at the brace intersection, this study proposes an arc-shaped chevron-braced frame (HZC), a polyline chevron-braced frame (ZXC), and lateral rod chevron-braced frames (ZCG). Concurrently, the monotonic loading performance, hysteresis performance, bearing capacity degradation, failure mode, vertical displacement at the brace point intersection, energy dissipation capacity, and fracture trend of the HZC, ZXC, and ZCG were analyzed and compared with those of the chevron-braced frames (ZC). The analysis results demonstrated that the bearing capacity of the ZC underwent an abrupt change during the loading process, while those of the other chevron braced frames did not. Except for the fracture trend, the seismic performance of ZCG is better than that of the other chevron-braced frames.
Highlights Seismic performance of different chevron braced frames was studied. Anti-buckling braces can solve the problem of out-of-plane instability of brace. The problems of large unbalanced force and vertical deformation of steel beams were solved.
