Strength of damaged military bridges
AbstractThis paper considers the information available to evaluate the residual strength of a metallic military bridge subsequent to the imposition of attack damage. The type of damage is restricted to be in the form of small and large holes and dents with cracking at their boundaries and the removal of sections of the flanges of the bridge beams. The information presented exemplifies that which would be relevant to steel and aluminium bridges although it is not intended to be immediately applicable to either. The paper reviews the need to use the limit state form of design analysis. It briefly outlines the requirement for in-depth assessment of the variabilities in loading and material properties to facilitate the development of more accurate formulations which will lead to the assessment of residual strength.
