Threats and opportunities for UK cities
AbstractModern European cities face a ‘communications landscape’ which is restructuring as rapidly as at any time in urban history. Radical technological convergence between the previously separate areas of telecommunications, broadcasting and computing — to create ‘telematics’ networks and services — is being paralleled by new methods of regulation and new types of national policy regimes. At the same time, the urban economic fabric is being rewoven, becoming ever-more dependent on telecommunications-rich sectors and activities. This complex and multifaceted process of change has profound implications for Europe's cities, presenting both threats and opportunities to cities and urban policy makers. This article examines the nature of these threats and opportunities, focusing particularly on the specific situation facing UK cities.
