Fuzzy fatigue life prediction
Abstract Fuzzy set theory is used to encode system uncertainty in a structural reliability analysis. The fatigue failure for joints is described by the common empirical relationship between the applied stress and the corresponding number of stress cycles resulting in a failure. The probability of failure considers uncertainties in this empirical strength model using stresses as random variables. Fuzzy regression is used to fit the small number of data points and the resulting fuzzy uncertainty is incorporated in the estimated probability of failure. Different techniques of using fuzzy set theory for this purpose are described. As an alternative, the above uncertainties can be considered with a Bayesian approach. A comparison between the two approaches indicates the usefulness of the fuzzy approach.
