AbstractThe paper describes the establishment, the scope and the implications of the Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESA) Scheme in England. The role of the Ministry of Agriculture is described in relation to the landscape monitoring and management functions associated with the Scheme. This includes the methodology used to evaluate the impact of the Scheme on landscape quality and as a basis for advice on landscape management.
