Properties of water-compatible furfuryl alcohol polymer concrete
AbstractNon-petroleum-based furfuryl alcohol (FA) can be used to produce a high-quality polymer concrete (PC) composite. Polymerization of the FA was performed at ambient temperature by use of α,α,α-trichlorotoluene (TCT) as an initiator and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as a promoter. The properties of the composite are dependene upon the rate of polymerization and the degree of dryness of the aggregate. Composites containing 8% water by weight of aggregate had compressive strengths >∼2000 psi (>13.78 MPa) at an age of 1 hr at ∼24°C. The inclusion of chlorine groups from the ZnCl2 promoter in the PC had a significant effect on the fire resistance of the composite.
