AbstractConcrete will be durable if the specifications under which it is procured require the appropriate limits and the concrete is produced to comply with the requirements. Thus the issue that must be resolved by the engineer is to anticipate the environment of service, identify the potentially deteriorative influences and their probable intensity, and prescribe proper precautions in the specifications and also prescribe therein appropriate contractor quality control measures and describe the quality assurance measures that will be taken by the owner. If these steps are taken in accordance with the guidance in the current ACI Manual of Concrete Practice, the concrete will be durable for the desired service life.
