Quadratic approximations in the displacement discontinuity method
Abstract The present work describes how some difficulties occurring in the displacement discontinuity method can be overcome by increasing the order of the approximations used. The method is derived from boundary integral equations which allow improved approximations to be incorporated in a straightforward way. The particular case of a piecewise quadratic approximation is discussed in detail and the effects of this are examined in two example problems. A number of advantages for the ‘quadratic elements’ are apparent on comparison of the numerical results with those obtained using the usual displacement discontinuity method.
