High-temperature rheological properties of asphalt binders modified with recycled low-density polyethylene and crumb rubber
Highlights Recycled low-density polyethylene (RPE) and crumb rubber (CR) were added to asphalt binders. The storage stability of the RPE-modified binders was improved after the hybrid modification with CR. The modifiers increased the parameter (G*/sinδ) and, consequently, the PG of the binders. The binders’ rutting performance was significantly improved with modifier addition. The hybrid modification showed to be an interesting strategy to increase sustainability in the paving industry.
Abstract This paper aimed at investigating the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt binders modified with recycled low-density polyethylene (RPE) and crumb rubber (CR). To this end, a set of tests was conducted, namely: rotational viscosity, storage stability, Superpave performance grading, and multiple stress creep and recovery. The results indicated that the hybrid modification enhanced the storage stability of the modified binders. The modifiers increased the Superpave parameter (G*/sinδ) and, consequently, the continuous grade and PG of the binders, as well as successfully enhanced the high-temperature performance of the binders as indicated by the MSCR test results. The hybrid modification with RPE and CR showed to be an interesting strategy to increase sustainability in the paving industry.
