The proposed design of the English Channel Tunnel
AbstractThis paper gives an overview of the history of the development of a fixed linked across the English Channel, including reasons why the project is now going forward. The article provides an analysis of projected traffic volumes and revenues from the Channel Tunnel, as well as a description of the tunnel scheme proposed by the Channel Tunnel Group/France Manche (the English/French partnership commisioned to design and execute the project). Engineering concepts and design, contractual arrangements, and financing issues are also discussed at some length in the article.
RésuméCet article présente une vue générale de l'histoire du développent d'un lien permanent á travers la Manche ainsi que les raisons pour lesquelles de project est désormais en cours. On analyse les volumes de traffic et les bénéfices projetéss et on donne une description du tunnel tel qu'il a été proposé par le groupe Channel Tunnel Group/France Manche (les partenaires anglais et francais désignés pour concevoir et exécuter le project). Les concepts techniques, la conception, les arrangements contractuels ainsi que les issues financiéres sont amplement discutées.
