AbstractThe Romanian captial — Bucharest (Bucureşti to the Romanians) — has become better known recently on account of the rapid pace of rebuilding which has led to the loss of many important historical monuments. But although this present trauma is unique in its intensity and insensitivity it is but the latest phase in the reshaping of the city which has occurred during a century of Romanian independence. The growth of Bucharest has involved rapid suburban expansion, especially since the Second World War, and has necessitated a radical overhaul of the infrastructure, while the economy has been diversified with a very large industrial establishment to complement the historic functions of administration, culture and trade.
