Prehistory and planning on the moorlands of England and Wales
AbstractThe current nature and landscape of the moorlands is described with an emphasis on the relations between ecology and land use. The present scene is the outcome of many thousands of years of transformation by human societies, each leaving particular imprints which can still be seen. These people, both the last hunter-gatherers and the agriculturalists, were responsible for the removal of much of the cover of mixed deciduous forest and its replacement with sedge, grass and low shrub vegetation; and in places they were instrumental in allowing the inception of the growth of deep peat. Together with the historical record, this makes a strong case for planners to allow visual and ecological change even in areas such as the National Parks since it is the use of the area that has brought about the landscape which is so well regarded.
