A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This is the first part of a two-part paper dealing with the structural design and construction monitoring aspects of façade retention projects in town and city centres. The subject matter covered includes the initial research, detailed surveys, and preliminary design assessments that are necessary to arrive at the preferred method of construction to be adopted for new buildings behind the façade and/or other external walls of existing buildings which are to be substantially demolished. The second part of this paper, which will be published at a later date, will cover detailed structural design and specification aspects, tender invitations and appraisals and the demolition and construction monitoring necessary to ensure façade stability is maintained at all stages.
