Electronic lighting controls are now being specified for two principal reasons — to control energy consumption and provide flexibility. The first of these objectives is easily defined and demonstrated; the second is decidely harder to quantify. If properly specified and applied, lighting controls can undoubtedly reduce energy wastage, as indicated by the results achieved by the PSA, British Gas and the ETSU demonstration at Bradford Metropolitan Borough Council (see Figures 1,2 and 3). Each of these projects provides an example of cost effective controls using a very high level of localised manual switches combined with automatic timed off commands. At all times the staff can choose their own local lighting conditions — the timed commands only occur at natural breaks such as lunch or the end of the working day. Of course, staged switching and selected non-controlled lights ensure that the automatic off signals never plunge whole areas suddenly into darkness.
