A stair stringer for forming stairs is described. The stair stringer comprises an elongate stringer beam having a top end and a bottom end; a plurality of step tread brackets spaced along the stringer beam between the top end and the bottom end, each step tread bracket for receiving in use a tread of the stairs. A top mounting plate at the top end for fixing the elongate stringer beam into position. A bottom mounting plate at the bottom end; and a floor mounting plate that is adapted to be permanently attached to the floor.
