A railway platform safety method and apparatus which comprises: a dividing safety barrier placed adjacent to the carriageway and forming the platform into a primary waiting safety zone and a secondary train agressing zone; the safety barrier incorporating gates that ,re manually or automatically operated to open and close the barrier sections between the wo zones to prevent crossing over of persons from the primary zone to the secondary zone while a train is not present at the platform; the train may not enter or depart the platform while persons are present in the secondary zone as defined by the barrier and gates; t e barrier providing the separate zones to allow the egress of persons from the train throu h the secondary zone and prevent the clashing with persons awaiting entry to the train fro Ti the primary zone.
