Abstract Disclosed is a barrier system for a road which bridges a void, designed to contain an errant vehicle driving off the road and into the void. The barrier system has a support either side of the void and a rail fastened to the supports. The rail has a composite structure that comprises an external skin and a substantially non-compressible core extending lengthwise of the rail. The rail also has a coupling that connects the rail to one of the supports, where the coupling has a connection plate that attaches to a bracket of the support.
