Abstract Conventional gate openers require power sourced from a mains supply, or from solar panels, and use a mechanical arm and linkage moving a considerable distance to open and close swing gates. The automatic gate opener described has no such arm. The gate is controlled by moving the bottom (or top) gate hinge a short distance (about 50mm), so that the gate tilts laterally and the unhinged end of the gate lifts, which then swings open under the force of gravity only. The gate remains open to allow the passage of vehicles or stock, then the gate hinge is returned to its original position and the gate swings shut and latches. 5 3 6 4 5 -13 gate post gate post 1 \ 1 '2 +' 6 Figure Ia Figure lb moving the bottom hinge moving the top hinge iew actutcr 23 mountngbracket gae post Figure 2 REMOTE RADIO RECIEVER MICROPROCESSOR Fs-m--L LINEAR ACTUATOR Figure
