-12 The invention is a new style of concrete block for use in a concrete block construction system. The concrete block has upper and lower mating surfaces configured to mate with corresponding mating surfaces of similarly configured 5 concrete blocks, and each the concrete block has a number of recessed socket features in its upper and lower mating surfaces. The recessed socket features are each in the shape of a truncated cone shape, having a greater cross sectional area in the plane of its associated mating surface than a cross sectional area of the same recessed socket feature in a parallel plane that is situated at a distance from the 10 associated mating surface. Complimentary shaped concrete dowel members are fitted into the recessed socket features and help to hold the concrete blocks in place. Tie rods can be passed through passages between opposing sockets to tie layers of the concrete blocks together. 11FIGURE 1 13 19 FIGURE 2 1
