A programmable relay apparatus (100, 102, 104) is adapted for use with a movable-component controller (10) having a first controller contact (14) and a controller power supply (20). The relay apparatus includes a CPU (42), a relay switch (46), and a supplementary switch device (12). The relay switch when closed establishes electrical connection between the first controller contact and an activator terminal (16, 90), so that the first controller contact is in an active state. The first controller contact and activator terminal are not in electrical connection when the relay switch is open wherein the first controller contact is in a non-active state. The relay apparatus is adapted for the relay switch to be maintained in a closed position for a pre-programmed switch-closure duration. If the supplementary switch device is momentarily closed, it overrides the switch-closure duration, causing the relay switch to open before that duration is complete. The invention extends to a movable-component controller apparatus (10, 100) and to a method of retrofitting a movable-component controller apparatus.
