Abstract The invention provides a latch mechanism (1) of a vehicle glove box 20). The vehicle glove box (20) comprises a rectangular body or box (21) defining a storage space (22) for receiving and holding items therein and having an opening (23) for accessing that 5 space (22), and a cover (24) for the opening (23) of the rectangular body or box (21). The cover (24) is moveable between a closed position and an open position. The latch mechanism (1) comprises: a housing (2) configured to be mounted to a side (27) of the body or box (21); and an elongate latching member (5) within the housing (2), one end region (6) of which latching member (5) is configured to engage a strike (29) on the 0 cover (24) to retain the cover in the closed position. The latching member (5) is adapted for linear or siding movement between an extended position engaging the strike and a retracted position to release the cover to open the compartment. The latch mechanism (1) further includes an actuating assembly (7) having a first actuating member (8) that projects for manual contact by an operator and a second actuating member (10) located 5 within the housing (2) in abutment with the first actuating member (8). The first and second actuating members (8, 10) are configured for linear or siding movement along an axis (Y) generally perpendicular to an axis of movement of the latching member (5). Manually pressing the first actuating member (8) moves the second actuating member (10) to a depressed position and drives the latching member (5) from the extended 0 position to the retracted position.
