BITUMINIOUS EMULSIONS CONTAINING STEROL ADDITIVE FOR ASPHALT PAVEMENT
A method for slowing the aging rate of an existing asphalt-containing pavement comprising: applying a sterol-containing asphalt binder emulsion to the surface of the existing asphalt containing pavement; wherein the asphalt binder emulsion comprises asphalt binder and 0.5 to 15 wt. % of a sterol additive based on the asphalt binder weight; and curing the applied sterol-containing asphalt binder emulsion to form a surface treatment on the existing asphalt containing pavement, said surface treatment comprising the sterol additive, wherein the sterol additive in the surface treatment retards or slows the aging rate of the underlying existing asphalt-containing pavement, and wherein the sterol additive comprises a sterol blend of 10:90 ratio by weight to 90:10 ratio by weight of pure sterol:crude sterol.
