Herein is disclosed a mounting bracket for releasably mounting a handrail to a wall. The mounting bracket consists of a wall plate having a first mounting element and an arm having a second mounting element, the first and second elements configured to releasably lock together. The arm has a distal end for mounting to the handrail and a proximal end having the second mounting element. A lock mechanism is formed on the mounting bracket to releasably lock and unlock the arm to the base plate by engaging a key.
