A modular steel pipe stringer bridge haying a plurality of parallel pipe stringers extending between a first support means at a first end of the pipe stringers and a second support means at an opposing second end of the pipe stringers; a plurality of bearing plates, each bearing plate connecting a stringer to the support means by bolting or lag-bolting; a pair of opposing curbs extending along the length of the top of each of the outermost pipe stringers between the first and second support means; a material separator extending along the top of the full length of the pipe stringer assembly between the opposing curbs; and a granular material surface backfilled on top of the material separator along the length of the pipe stringers between the curbs.
