The invention relates to an electronically controlled locking system. For example, an electronic key can be used for locking and unlocking a car door and can be used for controlling a control system. An electronically controlled locking system 10 includes a receiver 12 for receiving signals 14 from one or more electronic keys 16, a locking and unlocking mechanism 18 that can be controlled on the basis of signals received from electronic keys, and a transmitter 20 for transmitting a message 22 confirming the successful execution of a locking and/or unlocking process to the electronic key that initiated the unlocking and/or locking process.
