A soil compacting device (1) has an upper mass (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) and a lower mass (12,13) that is coupled to the upper mass by a spring device (10,11) and that has a soil contact element (13). In addition, a drive is provided for producing a working movement of the soil contact element. The drive has an electric motor (3,4,5), a drive frequency of a drive movement produced by the electric motor being equal to a frequency of the working movement of the soil contact element. The invention further relates to a method for operating the provided soil compactor. The provided soil compactor and method can be reliably operated with a small production cost and high efficiency.
