The invention relates to a nipple pin material for a graphite electrode. The nipple pin material is characterized by comprising the following raw materials in parts by weight: 26-30 parts of ordinary calcined petroleum coke powder, 60-64 parts of medium-temperature modified asphalt, 4-6 parts of boric acid and 4-6 parts of oxalic acid. The invention further provides a preparation method of the nipple pin material. As two expansion agents, namely the boric acid and the oxalic acid, as well as the medium-temperature modified asphalt are adopted, and theoretical research and scientific experiments are adopted for determining the addition proportion of all the raw materials, the nipple pin material has the advantage of higher thermal expansion property, flowing property and residual carbon property; as the preparation method is scientific and reasonable in design, the product satisfies the use performance requirements of the graphite electrode and is obvious in effect.
