The invention relates to a light-transmitting bismuth-substituted rare-earth iron garnet-type sintered material represented by the formula R3-xBixFe5O12, said sintered material being characterized by having an average crystal particle diameter of 0.3 to 10 mum; and a magnetooptical device manufactured using the sintered material. In the formula, R represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Y and lanthanoid elements; and X represents a numeral number of 0.5 to 2.5 inclusive.
