The invention discloses a tamping machine, and relates to railway maintaining equipment. The tamping machine comprises a left connecting rod and a right connecting rod, wherein the left connecting rod comprises a left pickaxe head and a left force arm, and the right connecting rod comprises a right pickaxe head and a right force arm; a machine frame mounting component is horizontally arranged at a connecting position between the left pickaxe head and the left force arm; a standing rod is vertically arranged in the dead center of the machine frame mounting component in a penetrating and inserting manner, and a bottom surface travelling wheel is mounted at the lower end of the standing rod; a locking mechanism is arranged at the upper end of the standing rod, a sleeve ring is arranged on the standing rod above the locking mechanism in a sleeving manner, and a telescopic rod and a hydraulic cylinder are respectively arranged on the left side and the right side of the sleeve ring; the other end of the telescopic rod is hinged to the right force arm, and a piston cylinder in the hydraulic cylinder is hinged to the left force arm; a connecting rod is arranged between the left pickaxe head and the right force arm in a sloped and connecting manner. The tamping machine disclosed by the invention is simple in structure and convenient to operate and can effectively tamp railway ballast under steel rails, and only one hydraulic cylinder is adopted for driving, so that the production cost is reduced.
