The invention provides a road surface evenness detector based on an optical detection technology and a detecting method. The road surface evenness detector comprises a detection vehicle, line sources, a photographic device and a control processing unit; the multiple line sources are installed on one side of the tail or the head of the detection vehicle through supports, and the pointing direction of the line sources is parallel to the advancing direction of the detection vehicle; the photographic device is arranged on the other side of the tail or the head of the detection vehicle, and a certain angle theta is kept between the photographic direction of the photographic device and a detected road surface; the control processing unit is arranged inside the detection vehicle; the line sources are single-color light sources with straight-line irradiation areas or multiple parallel straight-line irradiation areas; and the control processing unit can control images generated by the photographic line sources of the photographic device on the road surface and can process the photographed images, and testing results can be reported in good time. The road surface evenness detector has the beneficial effects that the cost is low, and the size is small; detection can be carried out in real time, and normal vehicle driving is not influenced; and the detection efficiency and the detection accuracy are further improved.
