The invention discloses a novel guide rail, a guide rail system and a door or window employing the guide rail system. At least one stagnation section, of which the cross section is changed gradually or dramatically, is manufactured on a guide rail body, and rollers bear the gravity of the door and are pressed on the guide rail body. As the cross sections of the stagnation sections are changed, displacement of the door in the vertical direction is produced, it is difficult for the door or window to be separated from the stagnation sections without the effect of external force, and the location function of the door or window in one or more positions is fulfilled. A retaining device has the advantages of being small in size, flexible in application, safe and reliable and low in manufacturing cost. The guide rail or the guide rail system can be used for various doors or windows opened and closed through guide rails.
