To provide a free handrail that has a simple structure, that is easily transported, that can be produced inexpensively, and that can be easily and safely attached to existing temporary stairs or temporary scaffolding. A free handrail (1a) comprising handrail members (2) placed along an incline of temporary stairs (S), cylindrical support rods (3) for holding the ends of the handrail members (2), and fixing means (4) provided to the bottom ends of the support rods (3), the free handrail being linked in a detachable manner to step boards (P) of the temporary stairs (S) via the fixing means (4).
