The invention provides a modified cardanol derivative water reducer and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the following steps: (1), sodium cardanol sulfonate, unsaturated glycidyl ester, unsaturated carboxylic acid and salts thereof, vinylphosphonic acid and salts thereof, unsaturated amide and water are added to a reaction kettle, stirring is started, and heating is started; (2), when the temperature is increased to 65-100 DEG C, an initiator solution with the mass percentage concentration of 1%-10% is added dropwise, the initiator solution is prepared from an initiator and part of the water, the dropping addition time is controlled to be 0.5-4 h, and the temperature during dropping addition is controlled to be 75-100 DEG C; (3), after dropping addition, an alkaline modifier is added to regulate the PH, cooling and discharging are performed after 0.1-1 h, and the modified cardanol derivative water reducer is obtained.
