The invention relates to a milling unit (28) for an earth working machine (10), encompassing a milling drum (32) and a milling drum housing (30) supporting the milling drum (32) rotatably around a milling drum axis (R); the milling drum housing (30) surrounding the milling drum (32) on several sides; the milling unit (28) comprising a closed operating-medium circuit (44a, 52, 54, 56, 58) that encompasses an operating-medium pump (54) that is embodied to drive the operating medium to circulate in the operating-medium circuit (44a, 52, 54, 56, 58); the operating-medium circuit (44a, 52, 54, 56,58) encompassing a heat exchanger (52); the heat exchanger (52) being arranged on the milling drum housing (30). Provision is made that the heat exchanger (52) is embodied for flow impingement by a cooling gas separate from the operating medium; and that a cooling fan (60), which is embodied to drive the cooling gas for flow impingement onto the heat exchanger (52), is arranged on the milling drumhousing (30).
