The invention discloses a self-closing meter box based on a photoelectric switch and a using method thereof, and belongs to the technical field of electric power metering equipment. The meter box comprises a box body, a box door is rotatably mounted at one end of the opening side of the box body; a photoelectric switch is arranged in the box body; the photoelectric switch is connected with an electric control driving assembly through a wire. The electric control driving assembly can drive the box door to rotate and is powered by an external power supply; a set of self-locking assembly is arranged on the opening side of the box body and the box door; and the box body is also movably provided with a light shielding piece which is matched with the photoelectric switch for use. According to the invention, the problems that the current meter box is lack of limitation on a return spring, and the box door is affected by the action of the return spring to influence the work of an operator during the box opening work are effectively solved.
