The invention relates to the field of metal material heat treatment, and discloses a hypereutectoid steel rail and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the steps that (1) a high-pressure water gun is adopted for spraying a steel billet, the spraying pressure ranges from 20 MPa to 30 MPa, the spraying angle ranges from 40 degrees to 50 degrees, then the steel billet is rolled into a small-section steel billet, and then the small-section steel billet is rolled into a steel rail; (2) accelerated cooling is conducted through waste heat, obtained in the step (1), of the steel rail, and the hypereutectoid steel rail is obtained; in the step (1), a mixture of heavy oil, graphite and water is sprayed to the steel billet before each rolling in the process of rolling the small-section steel billet into the steel rail. According to the hypereutectoid steel rail prepared through the method, the dimensional precision does not exceed +/-0.5 mm, the pit depth of the steel rail is smaller than or equal to 0.5 mm, the tensile strength is larger than or equal to 1400 MPa, the ductility is larger than or equal to 10%, and the hypereutectoid steel rail is suitable for a high-speed heavy-load line with the locomotive speed larger than or equal to 120 km/h and the annual volume of traffic is larger than or equal to 100 million tons.
