The invention discloses an alumina-based coagulant for refractory castable, which is prepared by the following steps: with industrial alumina as a main raw material, calcining at a high temperature of 900-1100 DEG C, cooling to a room temperature state to obtain alumina raw powder with high specific surface area, adding propylene glycol as a grinding aid, and performing dry grinding by adopting a ball milling process to obtain alumina micro powder with high specific surface area. The invention also discloses an application of the alumina-based coagulant as a coagulant of a pure calcium aluminate cement combined refractory castable, and the use amount of the alumina-based coagulant is 0.1-1.5% of the mass of the refractory castable. The alumina-based coagulant provided by the invention solves the problem of slow coagulation of refractory castable in a low-temperature environment, the addition amount of the coagulant is moderate, the coagulant effect is very obvious in the low-temperature environment of 5 DEG C, the coagulation time of the castable can be remarkably shortened, and no impurity is introduced into the refractory castable.
