The invention relates to a device for generating vibrations (7) for a soil compaction machine (1), in particular a self-driving soil compaction roller, comprising: a first unbalanced member (25) and a second unbalanced member (26), which are each supported rotatably; a first hydraulic motor (9), which is designed to set the first unbalanced member (25) in rotation; a planetary gear drive mechanism (13), which is connected to the first hydraulic motor (9) and via which the second unbalanced member (26) can be driven; and a second hydraulic motor (10), which is likewise connected to the planetary gear drive mechanism (13) and which is designed to change the transmission ratio of the first hydraulic motor (9) to the second unbalanced member (26) via the planetary gear drive mechanism (13). A third hydraulic motor (11) is also provided, which is likewise connected to the planetary gear drive mechanism (13) and which is likewise designed to change the transmission ratio of the first hydraulic motor (9) to the second unbalanced member (26) via the planetary gear drive mechanism (13). The invention additionally relates to a soil compaction machine (1) and to a method (27, 32) for operating the device or the soil compaction machine (1).
