The invention provides an external wall thermal insulation system and a mounting method thereof. The external wall thermal insulation system comprises thermal insulation bricks, wherein the thermal insulation bricks are fixed to a building external wall through hanging assemblies, and every two adjacent thermal insulation bricks are separated through a separation assembly fixed to the building external wall; and each separation assembly comprises a pressure-bearing separation strip which separates the upper thermal insulation brick from the lower thermal insulation brick and is fixed to the building outer wall, and further comprises a protection batten which is fixed to the peripheral wall face of the building outer wall and is inserted into the gap between the thermal insulation bricks and the building outer wall. When the thermal insulation bricks are pulled outwards under the influence of external force, the thermal insulation bricks can be locked, so that the stability of the thermal insulation bricks after installation is improved.
