The invention provides a large thickener and an installation method thereof. The thickener comprises a tank body and a stirring device, wherein a central column hole is formed in the middle of the bottom of the tank body, and the stirring device comprises a central column, a stirring rake mounted on the central column and a driving device for driving the stirring rake to rotate; a central column of the stirring device is arranged in the tank body, and the lower end of the central column penetrates through a central column hole in the bottom of the tank body and is fixed on a central column base below the tank body; an underflow cone is connected between the tank body and the central column, the underflow cone is formed by splicing a forward taper pipe and an inverted taper pipe, and a small-diameter pipe orifice at the upper end of the forward taper pipe is connected with the column surface of the central column; and a large-diameter pipe orifice at the upper end of the inverted taper pipe is connected with the steel surface on the hole surface of the central column hole, a small-diameter pipe orifice at the lower end of the inverted taper pipe is connected with a large-diameter pipe orifice at the lower end of the forward taper pipe, and a plurality of sand outlet holes are formed in a seam between the inverted taper pipe and the forward taper pipe. According to the invention, an underflow cone can prevent mortar deposited on the stirring rake from blocking the sand outlet holes, and the problem of slurry leakage between the tank body and the center column can be solved.
