The invention relates to a welding unit (1) for welding rails (14) of a track, comprising a first sub-unit (2) which can be displaced on a unit guide (4) in the longitudinal direction of the track by means of a displacement cylinder (3) relative to a second sub-unit (5), each sub-unit (2, 5) comprising a clamping cylinder (11), a clamping cylinder (11) is arranged below the unit guide (4) and is connected to a clamping jaw (12) for clamping a rail (14). Here, the two subunits (2, 5) are connected by displacement cylinders (3), the cylinder (15) of the respective displacement cylinder (3) being connected to one subunit (2 or 5) and the piston rod (16) of the respective displacement cylinder (3) being connected to the other subunit (5 or 2). It is thus not necessary to support the displacement cylinder (3) with respect to the front cross-member.
