The present invention provides a sintered zinc oxide which is suppressed in reduction in mass during firing, and a zinc oxide powder prepared from the sintered zinc oxide. The zinc oxide powder contains a metal element M and satisfies the following condition 1 or condition 2. (Condition 1) The metal element M is a metal element M1-1, which is at least one selected from the group consisting of Bi, Co, Cr, Cu, In, Ni, Mn, and Sb, or a combination of the metal element M1-1 and a metal element M2, which is at least one selected from the group consisting of Al and Ga, and the content of the metal element M is 10 mol% to 10 mol%. (Condition 2) The metal element M is a metal element M1-2, which is at least one selected from the group consisting of Ba, Ce, La, Nb, Pr, and Sr, or a combination of the metal element M1-2 and the metal element M2, and the content of the metal element M is 10-2 mol%.
