The invention discloses a composite gypsum board and a method for preparing the board. The panel comprises a set gypsum layer sandwiched between two cover panels. The set gypsum layer is formed from at least plaster and water. The set gypsum layer includes a core and one or more skimming face layers. The solidified gypsum core constitutes a basic thickness of the total thickness of all gypsum layers. The first skimming face layer is included on a side of the core facing the first (front) cover plate. The second skimming face layer is included on the other side of the core facing the second (back) cover plate. The second skimming surface layer is formed from at least a starch-containing slurry. The stucco materials typically include high levels of salt impurities, e.g., when the stucco is obtained by calcination of low quality synthetic gypsum of certain sources.
