The invention relates to an actuator for a side door of a motor vehicle. The actuator causes the side door to automatically open or close according to the signal. The actuator has an electric motor which, upon actuation, generates a torque acting on the side door hinge via the transmission mechanism. The actuator also has a device for holding the side door in any open position, which device is implemented by the function of the motor itself, which motor is designed to have an increased cogging torque in the power-off state, which cogging torque is set to a value which is necessary as a holding torque for the open holding state of the door. In this way, the actuator is superior by a particularly simple and cost-effective design.
