The embodiment of the invention provides a method and device for determining the working condition type of an excavator, a controller and the excavator. The method comprises the steps that data characteristics of an excavator during excavation operation in a preset operation time period are obtained, wherein the data characteristics comprise working condition data characteristics corresponding to a plurality of working condition parameters of each excavation period in the preset operation time period; respectively inputting the working condition data characteristics of each mining period into a first working condition identification model and a second working condition identification model; obtaining a first working condition type which is output by the first working condition identification model and corresponds to each mining period and a second working condition type which is output by the second working condition identification model and corresponds to each mining period; counting all first working condition types and second working condition types of the plurality of cycles; and the working condition type with the maximum number is determined as the actual working condition type when the excavator performs excavation operation in the preset operation time period, so that the working condition type identification accuracy is improved, faults of the excavator are avoided, and the service life of the excavator is prolonged.
